Photographer's statement. The future can be difficult to predict. Back in March 2020 not many of us would have thought that we were about to face an almighty battle against a new enemy by the name of Covid. At the outbreak of the pandemic, New York City had one of the highest infection rates anywhere in the world. It was frightening time for all and the loss of lives and suffering turned out to be significant along with the economic damage suffered by businesses and individuals. New York City has dealt with numerous crises in its history and has always found a way to pull together and move forward and this has been true during Covid. With a mixture of solidarity, resourcefulness, determination and humor we are finally emerging from the hard days we have had to endure. I have always been drawn to the language of the streets. As well as providing the stage for activities, the streets participate, observe and comment on societal changes through posters, murals, graffiti and signage. These are the cave paintings of our modern society. The photographs in this exhibition serve as a testament to the indomitable New York spirit. ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER Paul Adrian Davies is originally from Cardiff, Wales and has lived on the Lower East Side of New York City since 1984. His work has been exhibited locally at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Centre, the Loisaida Centre, the Theater for the New City and the New York Public Library's Tompkins Square and Ottendorfer branches as well as internationally.
