Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1st edition (1992) of this English translation from the French, trans. Jennifer Barnes. Dramatic and in places highly excitable narrative from a French aristocrat, the Countess Henriette D'Angeville, who, from her home in Geneva could see the summit of Mont Blanc and in 1838, set out to ascend it. Succeed she did, after purchasing a considerable retinue of porters, guides and accoutrements (see Chapter 9, 'Luggage' for a list of her considerable requirements). Whilst D'Angeville may have been the first 'lady' to ascent MB, she was not the first 'woman', having been preceded in 1808 by a serving-woman, Marie Paradis. This translation is of great interest to the general reader and mountaineering historian. Barnes' English translation = 132 pages printed and bound on dark green boards, with gold, gilt lettering to spine. B. & w. photos. In Near Fine condition throughout. With non-clipped, pictorial dust-jacket also in Near Fine condition and protected in a clear wrapper. 8vo.
