No Binding. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 Typed letter on thin paper, March 31, 1979 from Chicago, Illinois. It reads in part: "Thank you for your comments concerning the hardback for paperback books. Strangely enough yours was the only negative comment I've received.as I go ahead with the project. The going will be slow and rough as I haven't been able to get someone to make them for me as yet-no one wants to tool up for a trial run. I guess I will have to make them for the trial period and then hopefully use facts and figures to sell a manufacturer. There won't be a new book this year.It has grown so much since its inception that it will require tremendous labor on my part. That coupled with the new project of launching the hardback is keeping me terribly busy. You will be one of the first to see the new book when it is completed. Sincerely, [signed] Joseph J. D'Ambrosio" One horizontal fold.

It reads in part: "Hope all is well! .I am in the process of publishing a new work, Olympe and Henriette, by Villiers de L'Isle-Adam.Olympe and Henriette is a late nineteenth-century French farce about two prositutes in Paris. It is letterpress printed with hand set type on paper specially hand made for this edition. I have designed, printed, and am binding the entire edition. It is not a usual fine press book. In fact, the title page carries the notation: Livre d'Art by D'Ambrosio. The binding is a book-in-a-box concept-only this time with a new twist which I will not reveal because I do not wish to spoil the surprise. Sincerly, Joe D'Ambrosio" Two horizontal folds.

No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 8 ½ in. x 11 in. sheet with watermark: 'Circa 83.' Printed D'Ambrosio signature and Sherman Oaks, California and small border designs. Joseph D'Ambrosio (1934 -2009) was a book artist. He wrote, set the type, did the designs, the artwork, and the binding. The letter reads in part: "Herewith [a] copy of the 'David' book. There is tissue paper in the clam-shell box with the book. This is for shipping purposes to keep the black cloth from rubbing the white cast paper as its transit knocks it about. You can remove it or leave it if it doesn't bother you. The clam-shell box is unique in that it has two devices on it which allow you to pick the box straight up without it falling open (from the weight of the book) and you can easily open it because of the natural arc the cover makes when doing so. The book is bound in cast paper and Masonic Sheep. The cast paper is meant to look like a marble quarry with a hint of the figures waiting to be released by the sculptor's chisel. Nestled within is a suggestion of the block from which Michaelangelo carved his statue of David.Joe" One vertical, two horizontal folds. Signed by Author(s).

No Binding. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 8 1/2 x 11 with rubber-stamped Sherman Oaks, California address. "July 29, 1980. Enclosed, please find a copy of my latest work, a miniature book, Emily & Oscar. I have hesitated to send it to you for two reasons: One, the printing is below standard, and two, because of that I under-priced it for the miniature market, and the dealer (and I) make practically nothing on it.So, why am I send you a copy? Because it seems to be a hit with miniature buyers and the edition will soon be sold out. The book is bound in Japanese tree bark and leaves from a creeping fig plant which I glue to the board and then coat with three coats of lacquer. The end-papers are made by stretching Japan paper (as a water color artist stretches paper) and while the paper is still wet, color is applied to only one section so that it may bleed into the white area which I use in the folds of the end-papers . The binding is extremely difficult and I can only get 5 copies a week out.The Compulsive Printer and I are presently working on another miniature-a story attributed to Dashiell Hammett.the mystery story I have been talking about. The woodblocks in it are done in a manner which shows roots to Nolde or Munch.Let me know your feelings concerning these projects. Sincerely, Joe" One vertical and one horizontal fold.

And, yes, it's a been a long time. But, if success is measured in monetary increments, I am still a long was off.Matrix #9.will carry an article on me.It is titled, 'A Maverick in the Print Shop,' and it is three views of my work. The first is written by Ward Ritchie, the second by Gloria Stuart, and the third, by myself. Included will be photos of my recent bindings.Reaction to the new bibliography has been most encouraging. My next project is already being planned.I will do a very small edition--probably only 25 copies. I may not even be able to afford the cost of producing it. But, I said that about Birds in Paradise.and I surprised myself by actually doing it. I am getting older and although my creative ideas keep multiplying, my body tells me to take it a little easier. Thank you for your encouragement over the years. Sincerely, Joe." No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. An 8 ½ in. by 11 in. sheet of brown paper, watermarked "confetti," on which Joseph D'Ambrosio has written a letter advising his clients of his working on a new book. Joseph D'Ambrosio (1934 -2009) was a book artist. He wrote, set the type, did the designs, the artwork, and the binding. Part of the letter, which is signed by D'Ambrosio in silver ink, and has dealer discount information for the book hand-written in silver ink, reads as follows: "I am taking this moment to alert everyone on my client list that I am currently working on a book written by Ray Bradbury and published by The Gold Stein Press. In this new work, Ray Bradbury's long poem, Christus Apollo, is set into nine separate boxes which are bound together between hard covers I have chosen to create an environment for Ray Bradbury's poetry using crumpled pieces of colored handmade papers--much as colored tiles in a mosaic setting (except that these are not illustrative, but representative)--and numerous inclusions. The book is presented in a side-hinged (clam-shell) box." The book was published in a deluxe, limited edition of only 50 copies. This letter from D'Ambrosio has been folded once horizontally and once vertically. THIS IS ONLY A PROSPECTUS BY THE ILLUSTRATOR, NOT A COPY OF THE BRADBURY BOOK. Signed by Author(s).
