August 1965 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Frankreich; eigentlich Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris) war ein schweizerisch-französischer Architekt, Architekturtheoretiker, Stadtplaner, Maler, Zeichner, Bildhauer und Möbel-Designer. Er war einer der einflussreichsten Architekten des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen neue Ideen aber auch Kontroversen auslösten. Corbusier veröffentlichte über 50 Bücher und initiierte mit der CIAM eine moderne Architekturbewegung. Seine Betongebäude begründeten den Architekturstil des Brutalismus. Er ist bis heute umstritten, besonders wegen seiner Sympathie und Verbindung zum Faschismus seit den 1920er Jahren.[1][2] Seit 2016 gehören 17 seiner Bauten in sieben verschiedenen Ländern zum UNESCO-Welterbe.[3] Sein Pseudonym Le Corbusier nahm er in Anlehnung an den Namen seiner Urgrossmutter Lecorbésier und an corbeau («Rabe») erstmals 1920 in der Zeitschrift L Esprit nouveau an.
