First edition, two volumes bound as one. Folio. 10 x 13.5 inches. Vol. I, xvi + 382 pp; Vol.II, vii.+ 387 pp. ( = 769 pp. in total). The two volumes illustrated by two coloured frontispieces and 401 and 527 figures in text respectively ( = 928 in total). Bound in original quarter brown buckram over tan buckram boards, spine gilt. Poor copy, with some water damage, not enough to to cause adherence of the fine art paper to itself, but sufficient to affect the cloth and to cause slight cockling of the paper. A reading copy for frequent use. A classic reference book on English furniture and woodwork, printed on fine quality art paper and copiously illustrated with high quality black and white photographs. It includes chapters on woodworking tools and methods, timber houses and roofs, staircases and panelling, bedsteads, chests and cupboards, oak chairs and tables, walnut chairs, marquetry and lacquer work and domestic clocks. Herbert Cescinsky, who was born in 1875, was an acknowledged expert who wrote numerous books on clocks and furniture and other still highly regarded works of art reference. It would be difficult to emulate the high production values required to produce such a work today. In 1922 it cost £7/17/6. ART REFERENCE FURNITURE ENGLISH ARTEFACTS ILLUSTRATED ART REFERENCE.
