Book
Hardcover. Condition: G. No Jacket. Photos, Line Drawings, Some Art (illustrator). Third. This was the third edition of the comprehensive listing of shipping lost on or near the New Zealand coast from the first dated wreck in 1795, with the last major loss reporterd in this edition that of the coaster Holmglen in November 1959. (The first edition of ". Shipwrecks" was published in 1936 and the second in 1951.) This third edition has become quite scarce. As well as listing shipping lost on a year by year basis there is also a locality index giving place, date and name of ship, plus an extended general index. B/w illustrations throughout, mainly photos with some art for early losses, the frontis consists line drawings of various sailing vessel rigs. Third edition of 1961, 408 pages. The book is given a G rating for several reason, mostly for cosmetic faults --- former owner name written with felt pen across top of front cover, spine with gilt titles lightly sunned, 1cm vertical split at lower front hinge, with light wear to spine extremities, corners, front cover trifle loose with ink name address top front pastedown (rear board is firm). foxing to e/papers and to last approx 30 pages, particularly adjacent the final plate. These factors aside the text block is tight and clean and could otherwise be rated VG. Page edges dusty with light foxing as closed, Heavy book at 1.1kgs unpacked, could require additional postage for off-shore delivery.

New Zealand Shipwrecks was first published in 1936 and subsequently updated in 1951, 1961 and 1972 with this reprint of the fourth edition following in 1974. Initial publications were co-outhored by Ingram and P Wheatley. The first recorded wreck on NZ shores was in 1795, with large numbers of sailing craft subsequently meeting their end on or off the coast, In addition to historical wrecks the more recent additions to the list include the coasters Homeglen (1959) and Holmbank (1963), the collier Kaitawa (1966), the inter-island ferry Wahine (1968) and the coaster Maranui (1968).
