Book
Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. MICHAEL WHELAN & DAVID A CHERRY (illustrator). It s set several years after the end of Chanur s Homecoming, and Hilfy Chanur, who we first met as juniormost on the Pride, is captain of her own ship. Tully, the lone human of the series, is still on the Pride, and doesn t appear in this volume except in dreams, making it, unusually, a book without any humans at all. The settings are the same, but there are only two continuing characters, and you don t find out that one of them even is the same person until the end. Hilfy is given a mission by the stsho stationmaster of Meetpoint, to take a ceremonial object to Urtur, for a huge fee. Of course it s more complicated than it seems, especially when she picks up a male hani crewmember. Hallan Meras was the bright-eyed young male last seen in the epilogue to Chanur s Homecoming. There were several years between Homecoming and Legacy, and I re-read the trilogy several times, so when I discovered Hallan Meras in a Meetpoint jail having conversations with the kif jailors, I was staggered. He was supposed to be our hope of a better future! But he still is, and there s one way in which this novel can be read as a romantic comedy. A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact.

"The series is set in the same Alliance-Union universe of Downbelow Station, but in a region of space in the opposite direction from Earth as the Alliance and Union. It is occupied by a number of spacefaring civilizations bound by a set of trade treaties into a so-called Compact. The Compact is not a political organization, and has no government; it deals only with open trade, leaving the component civilizations to resolve conflicts between themselves. Human space borders kif and knnn territory, the most aggressive and enigmatic species of the Compact respectively. First contact ensues when an ambitious kif hakkikt (prince) captures a human exploration ship. The last surviving crew member, Tully, escapes while the kif ship is docked at a station and winds up on The Pride of Chanur, a hani merchant vessel commanded by Pyanfar Chanur. This triggers the events of the first novel in the series and its three-part sequel." (from Wikipedia).

"Cherryh's works depict fictional worlds with great realism supported by her strong background in languages, history, archaeology, and psychology. In her introduction to Cherryh's first book, Andre Norton compared the effect of the work to Tolkien's: "Never since reading The Lord of the Rings have I been so caught up in any tale as I have been in Gate of Ivrel." Another reviewer commented, "Her blend of science and folklore gives the novels an intellectual depth comparable to Tolkien or Gene Wolfe". Cherryh creates believable alien cultures, species, and perspectives, causing the reader to reconsider basic assumptions about human nature. Her worlds have been praised as complex and realistic because she presents them through implication rather than explication. She describes the difficulties of translating/expressing concepts between differing languages. This is best demonstrated in both the Chanur and Foreigner series." (from Wikipedia).
