Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Lili Munk (illustrator). Book Club Edition. First published as a translation by Sir Richard Burton in 1886 and privately printed for the Kama Shastra Society, this is a Book Club edition of 1982. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of largely gold and red jacket and spine, top front corner slightly split on inside flap, some spotting and browning to page block and endpapers, spine faded, not price clipped (no price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 271pp. The Perfumed Garden of Sensual Delight is a fifteenth century Arabic sex manual and work of erotic literature by Muhammad ibn Muhammad al Nefzawi, also known simply as 'Nefzawi'. The book presents opinions on what qualities men and women should have to be attractive and gives advice on sexual technique, warnings about sexual health, and recipes to remedy sexual maladies. Explorer, writer scholar and soldier Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-90), had long had an interest in sexuality and some erotic literature. However, the Obscene Publications Act of 1857 had resulted in many jail sentences for publishers, with prosecutions being brought by the Society for the Suppression of Vice. Burton referred to the society and those who shared its views as Mrs Grundy. A way around this was the private circulation of books amongst the members of a society. For this reason Burton, together with Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot, created the Kama Shastra Society to print and circulate books that would be illegal to publish in public. Quite scarce, even in this Book Club edition.
