Book consists of discussions about the proper techniques of sexual love, including recipes for sundry herbal concoctions to "enlarge and lengthen the part" as well as to tighten and pucker-up the Yoni, made loose and flaccid by childbearing (".apply it inside the Yoni, and the effect will be a resemblance to that of an unmarried woman." [OR] ".apply them inside the Yoni, and the hollowness which is felt after child-birth will at once be filled up." (p. 49.) OR for a chemical depilation: ".keep in the sun for seven days, and mix with a little Harital (orpiment, yellow arsenic, or sulphuret of arsenic) then apply it to the Yoni, and all the hair will disappear.".

Book
Reprint. Small 8vo., pp. 144, diagrams and tables. Full vellum gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Vellum slightly grubby, signs of an erased ink inscription to front pastedown, light ink stamp "Adrienne Lee" to front free endpaper, otherwise a very good copy. In 1873, Burton prepared an anonymous literal translation of the Kama-Shastra or The Hindoo Art of Love, of which only six copies were printed. It was planned to reissue the work in 1885, but only proofs appeared before plans for publication were abandoned. However, no less than three reprints appeared soon after, all bearing the date 1885. This copy conforms to Penzer's description of the third reprint edition. Burton's Kama Shastra Society and its quasi-scholarly publication of erotic material served as the model for Leonard Smithers' later Erotika Biblion Society. [Penzer, An Annotated Bibliography of Sir Francis Burton, pp. 171-173.].

To all intents and purposes the first edition (the work was originally published in 1873, but only four or six copies were printed), of which Penzer notes three variant printings, all issued in 1885. This copy is apparently the Third Reprint, though the leaves do not bear watermarks.
