Kein Einband. Condition: Sehr gut. Cody, William F. "Buffalo Bill" (1846-1917) - Autograph letter signed re: death of his daughter - American scout, bison hunter and showman. Autograph letter signed "W. F. Cody". 1p., 5.75 x 9.0 inch, pictorial illustrated printed stationery "The New Hoffman House, Madison Square, New York", 1904 February 21. To "My Dear Bacon". In full: "I have had the worst sorrow of my life. My darling child Arta was my love. I start for Cody 23rd. Will be home a month. Write me there. Your friend." Mailing folds, slightly discolored, ink smudge to first letters in name, else fine condition. A short, poignant letter referring to the recent death of his daughter Arta Lucille. Her death was a major calamity in Cody's life and he never got over it. Cody married Louisa Frederici in 1866. Bill and Louisa had four children: Arta Lucille (1866-1904) was born at Leavenworth, Kit Carson (1870-1876) and Orra Maude (1872-1883) at Ft. McPherson, Nebraska and Irma Louise (1883-1918) at North Platte. Accompanied by a James J. Spence, Jr. Letter of Authenticity. Unfortunately the LOA speaks of a son by the name of Certes. This is wrong, Cody had no son with this name and clearly writes "Arta" and she died in the year of the letter, January 30, 1904. A wonderful and personal content Buffalo Bill letter. COMES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY BY ANDREAS WIEMER HISTORICAL AUTOGRAPHS. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Signatur des Verfassers.

8vo. 1 p. Adressed in a different hand. Inscribed for Vsevolod de Sipiaguine (Sipyagin) of Graz: "W. F. Cody / Buffalo Bill". - The famed cowboy and showman, announced as "Büffel Willy" on the Austrian and Bavarian legs of his tour, performed "Buffalo Bill s Wild West Show" in Vienna twice, in 1890 and again in May and June of 1906. For the latter show, a three-week affair involving a cast of 800 performers and 500 horses, an amphitheatre arena with a capacity for 12,000 viewers was built near the Rotunde dome in the Prater. "Twenty days of the show drew an audience of more than 200,000 spectators - an enormous success" (cf. Wiener Zeitung, 30 March 2016).

4to. ½ page. To a former employee whom he provides with a ticket to an arena box at his show: "My dear Lou: Will be awfully glad to see you. I enclose you a requisition that will admit you and party to an Arena box but [autograph insertion: 'fill in date'] you can fill it in. When you be sure and ask for me and any of my men will bring you to me after the performance. Your old boss [.]". - "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" was one of the most successful American variety shows of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1909 Cody merged with a former rival, Gordon William Lillie ("Pawnee Bill", 1860-1942), to create "Buffalo Bill s Wild West and Pawnee Bill s Great Far East". The combined production, sometimes called the "Two Bills Show", featured traditional frontier acts with more exotic attractions like elephants, camels, and belly dancers. Mounting debt and a series of poor investments eventually forced Buffalo Bill to declare bankruptcy and shut down the show in 1915. - On colour-illustrated headed stationery of "Buffalo Bill's Wild West combined with Pawnee Bill's Great Far East", including Cody's and Lillie's portraits in profile. Folded.
