English-born Brewer began his life in the American West at age 19 in the year 1870 at Abilene, Kansas, where he met every cowboy worth meeting. He worked at various times in Nebraska, the Dakota Territory, in a variety of jobs and occupations, before finally settling down to prospecting and mining engineer.
