Book
Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. Conceived as a sequel to the critically acclaimed 'Tapestry in the Renaissance: Art and Magnificence (2002),' this lavishly illustrated volume is the first comprehensive survey of 17th-century European tapestry available in English. From the Middle Ages until the late 18th century, European courts expended vast sums on tapestries, which were made with precious materials after designs by the leading artists of the day. Yet, this spectacular medium is still often presented as a decorative art of lesser importance. 'Tapestry in the Baroque' challenges this notion, demonstrating that tapestry remained among the most prestigious figurative mediums throughout the 17th and early 18th centuries, prized by the rich for its artistry and as a propaganda tool. The book features forty-five of the finest surviving examples from collections in more than fifteen countries, as well as a number of related designs and oil sketches. Through these it examines the stylistic developments of tapestry between 1590 and 1720, when such masters as Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, Simon Vouet, Charles Le Brun, Pietro da Cortona, and Giovanni Romanelli responded to the challenges and opportunities of the medium in the context of contemporary artistic developments. Back dj has a open tear othewise a very nice cleant tight copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This is the hardback edition, not the paperback edition. Printed and bound in Italy. 12 x 9.25 inches. Unbumped spine head and tail, and sharp corners. Text block firmly bound in. Cocoa brown cloth hardboards with crisp gilt lettering to the front and spine. With 392 numbered pages. Numerous color plates, most of which are full-page. Also with B&W illustrations. Lacking the dust jacket. An exceptionally clean and attractive copy. No remainder marks. A Near Fine book. 5 lbs. 8 oz. weight. According to one review, "The exceptional collection of French decorative arts in the J. Paul Getty Museum contains more than four hundred objects, most of them dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This gorgeously illustrated volume brings together forty-four objects from the Baroque and Régence periods, roughly corresponding to the reign of Louis XIV and the years immediately following his death in 1715. The selection includes richly veneered cabinets, commodes, and desks; carved tables and chairs; and gilt-bronze light fixtures and firedogs that exemplify the superior craftsmanship and elaborate design characteristic of the Baroque style. Each object is described and analyzed in terms of its style, use, provenance and published history, as well as its construction and alterations, materials, and conservation. With its painstaking attention to detail, this sumptuous volume is the definitive catalogue of the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection of French Baroque furniture and will be of interest to scholars, conservators, and all students of the French decorative arts.".
