Illustrated throughout with plates. Bound, as issued, in a variety of styles of cloth. Gilt lettering to spine of The London Journal a bit dulled; scratch mark to spine of Boswell for the Defence; patch of discoloration to lower board of the second Grand Tour volume. In other respects a very good set. §Each volume is housed in a handsome purpose-made buckram slipcase, with contrasting leather labels to spine, the spines lettered in gilt. The arrangement of the numbering of the slip-cases varies slightly from the order in which each volume originally appeared. Portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds - somewhat awkwardly issued as the third volume of the series - appears as the slip-cased volume 14. A unique set, presenting a striking appearance on the shelf.
