Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First edition. A good study copy. Creased spine edge, and light dampstaining to inside jacket and rear board, does not affect text or endpapers. From a prominent scholar of the Romantic Movement, and an editor of the collected works of Coleridge, a penetrating analysis of the key unfinished poems of the great romantics: The Recluse (Wordsworth), Kubla Khan and Christable (Coleridge), Hyperion, and the Fall of Hyperion (Keats), The Triumph of Life (Shelley) and Byron's Don Juan. As the Romantics attempted to bridge the deepening chasm between the Cosmos and scientific world views through imaginal participation in 'reality', which became increasingly difficult to assert and sustain, as the gap between man, nature and spirit further widened. His conjecture upon the unfinished poems is that they remained unfinished for a reason, each its own.
