São Francisco de Paula (Paola, Nápoles, 1416 - Plessis, França, 1507), inspirado pelo exemplo de São Francisco de Assis, viveu uma vida marcada por uma elevada espiritualidade, pela pobreza e pelo amor ao próximo, demonstrado no completo despojamento de si, numa grande simplicidade e humildade. Possuía em elevado grau o dom da profecia e são-lhe atribuídos grande número de milagres, incluindo a ressurreição de várias pessoas. Fundou a Ordem dos Mínimos. A sua vida e as suas acções inserem-se no movimento de reforma da Igreja Católica que começou na primeira metade do século XV e procurava o aperfeiçoamento da vida cristã. Foi beatificado em 28 de Julho de 1513, pelo Papa Leão X e Canonizado em 1 de Maio de 1519 pelo mesmo Papa. A sua festa celebra-se em 2 de Abril e é o Padroeiro dos marinheiros. Francisco de Paula Bossia (fl. 1744), frade da Ordem dos Mínimos de S. Francisco de Paula, onde exerceu o cargo de Vigário Provincial entre 1744 e 1764. São desconhecidas as suas datas de nascimento e de óbito, mas sabe-se que era natural de Espanha. Francisco Vieira Lusitano (Lisboa, 1699-1783) Cavaleiro professo da Ordem de Santiago da Espada, Pintor Histórico da Casa Real e da Academia Real da História Portuguesa, e Académico de Mérito da Academia de São Lucas de Roma, foi um dos maiores gravadores portugueses do século XVIII. Jerónimo António Gil, (Zamora, 1731 ? Cidade do México, 1798) foi um gravador espanhol de estilo neoclássico. Destacou-se pelo seu trabalho e administração da Real Casa da Moeda do México, pela fundação de uma escola de gravura na mesma instituição e, mais tarde, pela fundação e direção, até à sua morte, da Real Academia de Belas Artes de São Carlos. Possuía em elevado grau o dom da profecia e são-lhe atribuídos grande número de milagres, incluindo a ressurreição de várias pessoas. Fundou a Ordem dos Mínimos. A sua vida e as suas acções inserem-se no movimento de reforma da Igreja Católica que começou na primeira metade do século XV e procurava o aperfeiçoamento da vida cristã. Foi beatificado em 28 de Julho de 1513, pelo Papa Leão X e Canonizado em 1 de Maio de 1519 pelo mesmo Papa. A sua festa celebra-se em 2 de Abril e é o Padroeiro dos marinheiros. Francisco de Paula Bossia (fl. 1744), frade da Ordem dos Mínimos de S. Francisco de Paula, onde exerceu o cargo de Vigário Provincial entre 1744 e 1764. São desconhecidas as suas datas de nascimento e de óbito, mas sabe-se que era natural de Espanha. Francisco Vieira Lusitano (Lisboa, 1699-1783) Cavaleiro professo da Ordem de Santiago da Espada, Pintor Histórico da Casa Real e da Academia Real da História Portuguesa, e Académico de Mérito da Academia de São Lucas de Roma, foi um dos maiores gravadores portugueses do século XVIII. Jerónimo António Gil, (Zamora, 1731 ? Cidade do México, 1798) foi um gravador espanhol de estilo neoclássico. Destacou-se pelo seu trabalho e administração da Real Casa da Moeda do México, pela fundação de uma escola de gravura na mesma instituição e, mais tarde, pela fundação e direção, até à sua morte, da Real Academia de Belas Artes de São Carlos. Illustrated hors-texte on the title page with an etching by Vieira Lusitano, engraved by Jerónimo António Gil. It depicts St Francis of Paola in an oval frame, seen in bust, facing three-quarters to the left, holding a staff in his hand and his head covered with the hood of his habit. On his chest is a glowing plaque bearing the word "Charitas". It also includes a fold-out genealogical diagram of the provinces of the order, after page 614. On the first page of the dedication there is a beautiful allegorical headpiece and a decorated initial etched in metal plate. The headpiece features the arms of Queen Mariana Vitoria de Bourbon, supported by angels, who are joined by two fantastic creatures. The one on the left blows a horn with a flag that reads "Charitas". Printed on thin paper, in round characters and some italics, particularly in the dedication, titles and quotations. It has the following typographical characteristics: on the title page, the letter z in "Dado á luz [.]" is inverted; page 465 has 453 instead, following the wrong numbering onwards; and the pagination of 613 has 113 instead.
