Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition. 130, [1] pp; figs. Original printed wrappers. Very Good. Copy of Abraham Pais, with his signature on front wrapper. Nicolaas Bloembergen: Nobel Prize, Physics 1981 (shared with Arthur Leonard Schawlow), "for their contribution to the development of laser spectroscopy." "As my good fortune would have it, my arrival at Harvard occurred six weeks after Purcell, Torrey and Pound had detected nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in condensed matter. Since they were busy writing volumes for the M.I.T. Radiation Laboratory series on microwave techniques, I was accepted as a graduate assistant to develop the early NMR apparatus. My thorough Dutch educational background enabled me to quickly profit from lectures by J. Schwinger, J.H. Van Vleck, E.C. Kemble and others. The hitherto unexplored field of nuclear magnetic resonance in solids, liquids and gases yielded a rich harvest. The results are laid down in one of the most-cited physics papers, commonly referred to as BPP (N. Bloembergen, E.M. Purcell and R.V. Pound, Phys. Rev. 73, 679, 1948). Essentially the same material appears in my Ph.D. thesis, 'Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation', Leiden, 1948, republished by W.A. Benjamin, Inc., New York, in 1961" (Bloembergen in his Nobel Lecture). "Bloembergen was born in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, on 11 March 1920. He obtained the Phil. Cand. and Phil. Drs. degrees at the University of Utrecht in 1941 and 1943, respectively. After surviving World War II in Holland, he came to America in the spring of 1946, walked into Professor Edward Purcell's office at Harvard University and requested the opportunity to do graduate work in the emerging field of nuclear magnetic resonance. This fateful step started a lifelong association with Harvard which continues to the present day. It also set the future pattern for his scientific work, which began with magnetic resonance and evolved in a natural way in quantum electronics, non-linear optics, and lasers. His Ph.D. thesis on nuclear magnetic relaxation became the classic Bloembergen, Pound and Purcell paper (BPP) in the Physical Review . He returned briefly to the University of Leiden in Holland to receive the Ph.D. degree in 1948. A measure of the continuing influence of his Ph.D. thesis is that it was first published as a [trade] book in 1961 - a full 13 years after he graduated" (IEEE Web site). The 1961 Benjamin trade edition of Bloembergen's thesis is readily available, but this original edition (sometimes described as published by Martinus Nijhoff, The Hague) is scarce.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (23.5 cm), 130, [2] pp. Printed wrappers (wrappers slightly stained, paper toned, ownership entry at the top of the title). Proof copy of a doctoral thesis submitted to the Leiden University. Nicolaas Bloembergen (1920-2017) was an eminent Dutch-American physicist, who shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics along with Arthur Schawlow and Kai Siegbahn. The work described in the thesis was carried out at Harvard Univerity in the years 1946-47 under supervision of Edward Purcell, who, together with his graduate students Torrey and Pound, discovered nuclear magnetic resonance just few weeks before Bloembergen's arrival. Bloembergen helped to develop the first nuclear magnetic resonance machines, which were the predecessors of modern-day MRI machines used to examine internal organs and tissues. The thesis includes chapters on a theory of the nuclear magnetic resonance, the experimental method, theory and experimental results, relaxation by quadrupole coupling.

Association copy with ownership signature on front cover of E C Stevenson, co-discoverer of the muon. Both were at Harvard in the second half of 1940s. "The hitherto unexplored field of nuclear magnetic resonance in solids, liquids and gases yielded a rich harvest. Essentially the same material appears in my Ph.D. thesis, "Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation", Leiden, 1948, republished by W.A. Benjamin, Inc., New York, in 1961. My thesis was submitted in Leiden because I had passed all required examinations in the Netherlands and because C.J. Gorter, who was a visiting professor at Havard during the summer of 1947, invited me to take a postdoctoral position at the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratorium. My work in Leiden in 1947 and 1948 resulted in establishing the nuclear spin relaxation mechanism by conduction electrons in metals and by paramagnetic impurities in ionic crystals, the phenomenon of spin diffusion, and the large shifts induced by internal magnetic fields in paramagnetic crystals." - Nobel Prize Biographical. An uncommon landmark work in physics by a Nobel Laureate with the association ownership signature of the co-discoverer of the muon. ; 130, (1)errata pages.
