Paperback. Condition: Good. 210 pages. minor wear, marks, tanned edgesSP READING THEIR WINGS: New Zealand WAAFs in WartimeBy Bee Dawson Penguin Books, NZ, 2004ISBN 9780143019121trade pb, 210ppGOOD: minor wear, m arks, tanned edgesWhen the Second World War broke out in 1939, the idea of women working in the Armed Forces was consi dered quite radical, in spite of a long tradition of Army nurses. The first women of the WAAF were greeted with opposition and dis approval, but by the end of the war they had become respected mem bers of the Armed Forces. Most WAAFs began serving in support rol es, but as the war progressed increasing numbers were trained to do 'men's jobs' such as instrument repair or armoury instruction. Many WAAFs lacked formal education and often knew little about ' the facts of life'. They joined up as girls and demobbed as matur e women, tempered by war, the loss of loved ones and a world fore ver changed. They drew great strength from each other and their f riendships have survived the post-war decades. Bee Dawson's inter views with these pioneering women reveal a diverse range of exper ience, from the excited fear surrounding the sighting of a Japane se spy plane to the tragedy of a plane crash; from improvised wed ding breakfasts to living in huts so cold their lipsticks froze. For many young women, this was undoubtedly the time of their live s.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Otari tells the story of Otari-Wilton's Bush, the only botanic garden dedicated solely to the collection and conservation of the plants unique to Aotearoa New Zealand and a native bush reserve with over a hundred hectares of regenerating forest, including some of Wellington's oldest trees. It begins with the Ngati Tama gardens in the area from the 1820s, and settler family the Wiltons, who protected acres of native bush for the community to enjoy, and then follows the evolution of the land into a plant museum under leading plant ecologist Leonard Cockayne and Wellington's first Director of Parks and Reserves, John Gretton MacKenzie.Botanical descriptions and archival research are enlivened by the colourful stories of the curators who created and managed the collections, starting with Walter Brockie in 1947, and the many gardeners, botanists and volunteers who have worked on the internationally renowned garden and reserve. Otari-Wilton's Bush is a taonga that sustains both the people who visit it and the country whose plant life it protects. The history of Otari-Wilton's Bush in Wellington, written by social historian Bee Dawson, told through anecdotes from the people who have been involved with Otari over the years, archival research and images, and photography by the award-winning Chris Coad. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
