Condition: Very good. - 38 words typed on a cream sheet of United States Senate letterhead, 8 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide, printed in raised lettering in blue with Bartlett's name at top left & a gilt seal above the address. Signed "Dewey". Folded twice for mailing. Together with the typed mailing envelope. Near fine. Bartlett writes to Art Sohmer, former chief-of-staff of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, thanking him for sending his wishes for Bartlett's good health. "I'm feeling fine, and should resume my Senate duties in a few weeks". Dewey Follett Bartlett, Sr. (1919-1979) was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1978. He did not run for reelection to the Senate that year and he died of the disease in March 1979. Bartlett served as the 19th Governor of Oklahoma from 1967 to 1971. He was the first Roman Catholic elected to that position in the state. He was defeated for reelection in 1970. In 1972 he was elected to the U.S. Senate and served one term.
