Leather Bound. pp. xxiv, 381; pp. xiv, 427. 8vo. Bound in full brown leather with gilt rules, lettering and decoration to spine, faint marbled foredges. Extremities lightly rubbed, some edgewear, superficial surface cracks to the spine of Vol. 2; ink name and date to corner of front free endpapers, contents remain clean and unmarked with tight, sound bindings. Overall, very good. Originally published in French as 'De l'esprit des loix' in 1748 it was immediately subject to censorship both by the French authorities as well the Catholic Church where it was added to the Vatican's "Index Librorum Prohibitorum" or List of Prohibited Books. A consequential work of political theory it influenced many outside of France, notably Catherine The Great who's, "Nakaz", copied more than 400 articles verbatim from the works of Montesquieu; it heavily influenced the Founding Fathers when they gathered for the Constitutional Convention of 1787 where they incorporated many ideas from Montesquie in the drafting of the United States Constitution.

The rare translation by irish historian and travel-writer, Thomas Nugent. A wonderful translation of this classic, with detailed Index and the brilliantly modest ending to Montesquieu's Preface: "If this work meets with success, I shall owe it chiefly to the grandeur and majesty of the subject. However, I do not think that I have been totally deficient in point of genius. When I have seen what so many great men both in France and Germany have written before me, I have been lost in admiration, but I have not lost my courage; I have said, with Corregio, And I also am a painter ["Ed io anche son pittore"] Includes chapters: Of the Relation of Laws to different Beings / Of positive Laws / Of the Nature of three different Governments / Of the Republican Governments and the Laws relative to Democracy / Of the Laws relative to the Nature of Aristocracy / Of the Laws relative to the Nature of a despotic Government / Of the Relation of Laws to the Nature of monarchical Government / Of the Principle of Democracy / Of the Laws of Education / Of Education in Monarchies / Idea of this Book / Of the Revealing of Conspiracies / Of armed Slaves / Several kinds of Slavery / Origin of the right of slavery among the Roman Civilians / Of the Separation of women from men / Of a Civil Law of the German Nation / Abortion - Why the women of America procured it [Volume II, p. 99] etc. etc. Thomas Nugent (c. 1700 27 April 1772 in Gray's Inn, London) was an erudite Irish historian and travel writer. Today he is known most of all for his travelogue of the Grand Tour, which was at that time popular particularly among English noblemen taking educational tours through Europe. His detailed descriptions of the France, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands of the time provide a rich source for historians of the situation in the second half of the 18th century. Little is known regarding his early years. He admittedly came from Ireland, though he spent most of his life in London. There he occupied himself as an author and translator. In the year 1749 he published the multi-volume work "The Grand Tour - containing an exact description of most of the cities, towns and remarkable places of Europe". This was the first detailed guidebook for English gentlemen wanting to go on the Grand Tour of Europe. Whether Nugent had actually undertaken this tour himself in unknown, although it is assumed on the basis of the detailed information and evident knowledge of the places depicted therein. Nugent devoted himself over the following years to translating works of the noted scientists of his time, mostly from French into English. To that end belongs a 1751 publication of the translation of "Principes du droit politique" by the Swiss jurist of Geneva, Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui (1694-1748) into English ("Principles of Politic Law", 1752). in the year 1756 followed a translation of Etienne Bonnot de Condillac's "Essai über den Ursprung der menschlichen Erkenntnisse" ("Essay on the origin of Human Knowledge"). Also in 1756, a newly updated version of his travelogue was published with the title "The Grand Tour, or, A journey through the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France". In the year 1759, he published a translation of the French historian Philippe Macquer (1720-1770) of Roman History ("Chronological Abridgement of the Roman History"). He then devoted himself to the French history of Charles-Jean-Francois Henault, ("Chronological Abridgment of the History of France", 1762). Nugent rece.
