Soft cover. Condition: New. Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (33 x 24 cm). In English. Color ills. 155 p. Throughout the ages, the Orient has attracted the interest of the West. European intellectual and artists have been mesmerized since the earliest times by this presumably mysterious and relatively closed world. As a natural consequence, during various periods many artists, either by travelling themselves or by travelling in their imaginations, sought to discover the essence of the Orient, and depicted or expressed in their works either the real Orient or their own visions of it. The movement known as Orientalism in European art, which appeared in conjunction with the Romanticist movement of the 19th century, focused on the East, primarily in the lands of the Ottoman Empire. Even long before the rise of Orientalism in European art, many European artists, fascinated by their first glimpses of the mysterious East and by the Turquerie fashion which was the result of the new relations with the Ottoman world. For nearly two hundred years, starting from the 18th century, numbers of painters, some of whom became known as the Bosphorus Painters, worked intensively in the lands of the Empire and depicted the Ottoman world ib its various aspects, consequently engraving those images in mankind's visual memory. The exhibition Portraits from the Empire sheds light on a special part of this opulent world. Almost sixty paintings selected from the Suna and Inan Kiraç and Sevgi and Erdogan Gönül collections bring us face to face with the peoples of the Ottoman world, their portraits and portrayals, sometimes very familiar and sometimes remote, even nearly foreign, in their physiognomies. These paintings, most of them created before the eye of the camera replaced the human eye, in the times when observing, studying, interpreting and depicting the world was the priority of painters, present the lost faces of an era long past with amazing reality and vividness.

"Pera Museum in collaboration with the Amsterdam Museum is organizing an exhibition exploring the commencement of four hundred years of fruitful cooperation between Turkey and the Netherlands. It was on 14 March 1612 during the ruling of the Ottoman Empire that the first Ambassador of Dutch Republic, Cornelis Haga, arrived in Constantinople. The year 2012 marks the four hundredth year of this diplomatic relations. In collaboration with several other leading partners, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Nationaal Archief in The Hague and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the exhibition aims to spread knowledge about historical and contemporary links between Amsterdam and Istanbul. The exhibition explores the historical and contemporary relations between two world cities and through these cities, implicitly also the two countries. 'Pioneers' and 'image (-forming)' are among the prominent themes. The exhibition is not intended as a complete survey of four centuries of diplomatic ties, but rather provides an attractive insight into the historical ties between Amsterdam and Istanbul, from 1612 to the present day. The exhibition is historical and social in approach, yet it also features important art works as well. A key section of the exhibition is a reconstruction of the Levantse Handel (Levant Trade) chamber that was based in the Town Hall (Palace on Dam Square) from the early 17th to early 19th century. A detailed inventory exists of the paintings and charts that were displayed on the walls of this powerful commercial office in Amsterdam. Many of these items, including an extensive series of portraits by Vanmour, from the collection of Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum will also be exhibited".

New ISBN: 9786054642649 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: History of art Painting Orientalism The exhibition Felix Ziem: Wanderer on the Sea of Light focuses on the French artist Felix Ziem, one of the most original landscape painters of the nineteenth century, and his paintings that mostly depict Istanbul and Venice where the sea and the city intermingle. In the paintings of Felix Ziem who is regarded as a pre-impressionist painter, it is possible to observe an endeavor to capture the vibrating effects of the ever-changing light by means of lively colors and fast, dynamic brush stroke techniques. While the articles written by the exhibition curators Lucienne Del'Furia and Frederic Hitzel concentrate on Ziem's life and art, the article by R. Baris Kibris, the curator of the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation, Orientalist Painting Collection, offers a view on the artistic milieu of the period.

The exhibition highlights the orientalist trend in Polish painting, as well as drawings and graphic arts. The works in the exhibition cover a wide period from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Among others, the exhibition includes drawings by Christian Kamsetzer of his Turkish travels, as well as oriental scenes by artists like Zmurko and Brandt. The artworks exemplify topics related to the Ottoman world, and to a lesser extent, the Near East and North African regions. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz. Works by other artists who had visited Turkey, among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, and Jacek Malczewski, are also included. Selected from the collections of Polish institutions ranging from the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznan, and Wroclaw, the University Library in Warsaw, to Lazienki Palace Museum, the exhibition brings together approximately 190 works. The apogee of Orientalism, which refers to a cultural current in Europe centred on an interest in the cultures of the East manifesting itself in art, architecture, music, literature, and the theatre, arrived in the 19th century, when a distinct Orientalist current sprang forth from academic painting, inspired first and foremost by the cultures of the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as of Moorish Spain. In the specific case of Poland, interest in the Orient goes back to medieval times; a natural result of her geographic location, which rendered Poland particularly susceptible to influences from the East. To a large extent, this period in Polish history was defined by successive wars with the Ottomans, and it left an indelible trace in culture. A variety of equestrian types, generic skirmishes and great historic battles were depicted many times by various skilled artists, as well as Oriental characters, landscapes, and genre scenes -first and foremost of the harem. The latter subject matter, popular among audiences, was often taken up by painters who had never been to the East themselves. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artists among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, Jacek Malczewski, and especially Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz, are included, and also sheds light on the artistic influences of Poland's cultural interaction with the East, different from the Western Orientalist approach, through history, diplomacy, battles and travellers.

Since its earlier periods, The Ottoman Empire has established intense relations with European states. Urged by curiosity and a certain degree of fear at times, the West's efforts, on the other hand, to be acquainted with and understand this government of immense military power and source of political authority, emerged as a political exigency. Undoubtedly, the encounter of markedly different cultures bore the most enduring fruit within the realm of arts.
