Book
Soft Covers. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Maps, Drawings, Document Reproductions, (illustrator). 1st. Although d'Urville Island is relatively small, it has an extensive, interesting and colourful history, which is well recorded here by Olive Baldwin. The island lies at the north west extremity of the South Island's Marborough Sounds area and French Pass is on its south eastern coast and is the extremely narrow passage between island and mainland. The author relates the story in two volumes, this being the first volume only, the second followed in 1980. Book one covers ancient times including the mythology of the early Polynesian settlers and the Maori people who followed. These are given comprehensive coverage. Then follows detail of the earliest European explorers to visit these waters including Tasman, Cook and the noted French navigator, Dumont d'Urville, who was to give his name to the island in 1827. Other topics in the first book include the era of the whalers, the arrival in the area of the first pioneer settlers, surveying and land sales (the NZ Land Company purchased the island twice) and the religious influences on the island. A chapter on little-known pre-historic rock quarries provides an insight into an ancient industry. Place-names on the island are explaiend as to origin, meaning and legends. (The author's second book examines in detail post -European development on the island). First edition of 1979,164 pages including two appendices, references and index. illustrated throughout with photos, contemporary art and drawings including portraits (three photos are in colour),document reproductions and several maps --- one fold-out at back. Orange card covers are VG+ with b/w art to front, small ink name/date top corner FFEP, otherwise internally excellent. This is a scarce publication.
