DePol, John (illustrator). 8vo., half cloth, decorated paper covered boards, 168 pages. Beginning in the 1950s, the American master of wood engraving, John DePol (1913-2004), cut small endgrain blocks featuring subjects from Nature, the Heavens, the Book Arts, and fantastical abstract/geometrical designs. Although many of these images were made into patterns and used as binding papers in a number of important fine-press books, the full breadth of this aspect of DePol's work appeared for the first time in the 2000 limited edition of this book; this aspect of DePols work is not included in the Book Club of Californias John DePol: A Catalogue Raisonné published in 2004. The images117 units with a pattern formed from each are reproduced in Endgrain Designs & Repetitions as originally conceived by DePol: in beautiful black and white. The book also includes an autobiographical sketch written by DePol, a short essay on the history of patterns in book publishing by myself, and the publication history of the patterns. From the author - Over the past few years, people have asked about a less-expensive edition of this book, and because of those inquiries and the interest in the 2014 DePol exhibit that I curated at the University of Michigan Library, Endgrain Designs & Repetitions is now available at an affordable price. Except for the color specimens that were included in the limited edition, this offset-printed book features the same text (with some updated information) and units and patterns, as well as a new Preface. half cloth, decorated paper covered boards.

cloth, dust jacket. Papermaking (illustrator). 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xiv, 389 pages. First edition. From the Hand to the Machine traces the technology of paper and the related trades of printing, printmaking, and drawing through a century of intense technological innovation and social change-with consequences that reach down to the present day. While the focus is on nineteenth-century American papers, the descriptions of paper, hand and machine papermaking technologies, and the interactions between paper and mediums provide a foundation of understanding for any conservator working with paper, both unbound and bound material. The chapters on conservation relate specific characteristics of paper and its deterioration to treatment options and decision-making.From the Hand to the Machine is based on knowledge accumulated by Dr. Baker over a period of forty years as paper conservator, educator, and scholar, as well as book-arts practitioner-hand papermaker, letterpress and fine printer, punch cutter, and bookbinder. In 2005, Baker received the Samuel H. Kress Conservation Publication Fellowship to prepare the manuscript. A Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation, she is Senior Conservator at the University of Michigan Library. With over 200 illustrations including a section in color. Includes various appendices, a glossary, bibliography and index.
