Hardcover first edition - First printing. Includes excerpts from Austin's 'Earth Horizon' and 'The Land of Journeys' Ending' and Muir's 'The Grand Canyon of the Colorado' and 'Travels in Alaska.' Selected by Ann Zwinger, who also wrote the introduction and provided the illustrations for this attractive volume. In her introduction, she states: 'Muir and Austin are the first truly western nature writers. Their writing, their point of view, their dedication to the mountains and the deserts of the West have sustained western nature writers from their day forward.' Austin was also a pioneering feminist and her writings are often tinged with her political awareness. xxvi, 182 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket (as new.).

A very good issue overall, generally clean, with minor exterior wear, but spine chipped at the edges top and bottom; internal binding solid, paper lightly yellowed with some minor foxing. This is an original issue and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) as well as the advertisements and covers. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time.

The spine is rubbed & faded with pieces out of the head & tail. The COMPLETE 81-issue run of this fantasy / science fiction / horror pulp magazine, September-October 1939 through June 1953. The first few issues contained mostly shorter fantasy works, reprinted from the Munsey chain of pulp magazines. Within a few months, each issue contained a complete fantasy novel either from the old pulp magazines or from out-of-print hardcover books. Many issues contained shorter works in addition to the novels, some being original works, others being reprints. The first 5 issues had text-only covers, but from then on featured marvellous covers from Virgil Finlay, Frank R. Paul, Lawrence and others. The condition of the magazines ranges from good to almost as new, with many of the earlier issues (1939-1944) being especially nice and likely unread.
