Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good+. First Edition. Dust jacket soiled and chipped, water stain base of spine ; A tight solid book. DJ in protective Mylar sleeve, unclipped. A map of the mine on front and back end papers. This appears to be a novelized account of the attempts to rescue the miners. ; B&W Photographs; 129 men went down in the mine that day but only 116 made it out. Human error caused the colliery's extension to breach an underground lake causing a flood of liquid peat and a massive collapse. "Never has there been a pit disaster to compare in terms of human courage and human error with that which overwhelmed Knockshinnoch Castle Colliery, in New Cumnock, Ayrshire, in the wet September of 1950. Black Avalanche is written by the famous husband and wife team, Arthur and Mary Sellwood, who learnt the truth about the disaster from the men and women who experienced this horrific disaster first hand. This book details each stage of the rescue and reports the reactions of those trapped underground. Black Avalanche tells the story of the men who lived their lives underground and of the women who feared for their safety. Finally, Arthur and Mary Sellwood illustrate how tragedy and disaster can unite people, regardless of their class, age or gender, as they struggle to cope with the situations they find themselves in. Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Plans (illustrator). 1st. As bad as it was, the mining disaster at Knockshinnoch in September 1950 could have been much worse. While 13 men died when the coal mine was flooded a further 116 miners were rescued in a most difficult underground recovery operation, in which there were also examples of great courage and self-sacrifice. The authors of "Black Avalanche," produced a comprehansive account of the causes of the cave-in, the rescue efforts and the findings of the inquiry that followed, which concluded that but for a simple misreading of the geological structures above the workings during the planning stages in the early 1940s, the accident and deaths could have been avoided. Consequently, its recommendations for the improvement of mine safety were enacted. A gripping account from "prelude" to "aftermath." First edition from Frederick Muller of 1960, 176 pages, 12 b/w photos, plus three photos rescue work documents, detailed mine working plans on end-papers. Green hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+. intrernally excellent, no inscriptions. Unclipped colour art DJ VG with few small insect perforations on rear flap fold.
