YOUNGER, FATHER OF THE YOUNGER BROTHERS, WHO WAS ASSASSINATED AND ROBBED BY A BAND OF JAYHAWKERS, ALSO THE WAR RECORD OF QUANTRELL DURING THE THREE YEARS THAT COLE AND JAMES YOUNGER WERE WITH HIM ALSO A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF THE JAMES BOYS, WHOSE NAMES ARE FAMILIAR TO EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN THE COUNTRY, AND WHOSE REPUTED DEEDS OF BLOOD, ROBBERY AND CRIME OF ALMOST EVERY KIND, EQUAL THE MOST DESPERATE BRIGAND OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, ETC., ETC. BY AUGUSTUS C. APPLER, LATE EDITOR OF THE OSCEOLA, MO., DEMOCRAT. Poor condition. Second edition (preceded by an 1875 edition). Collates as [fp], [ffep], [frontis plate], i-iv, 5-32, [plate], 33-64, [plate], 65-96, [plate], 97-208, [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 21.5cm x L 14.75cm. Contemporary black cloth rubbed; board corners worn; "Younger Bros." brightly gilt stamped at front board center; spine cloth completely perished leaving underlying paper backstrip and quires exposed; remnant strips of past owner's black and gilt name band affixed near boards' upper spine corners. Marbled edges. In antiquarian ink on front pastedown are a two-line ownership inscription of G.N. Grisham (likely George N. Grisham) dated 1885 intertwined with eleven-line gift inscription to A.S. Deaderick both evidently being late 19th century residents of Jonesboro, Tennessee; front free endpaper has two blue ink stamps for "Jas. H. Epps, Jr. | Johnson City, Tenn." and "Epps Library." Occasional light foxing as well as some soiling and small light stains throughout; dark stain at upper fore-edge margins of pages 151-152; small chipping (likely a production fault) and some text loss to pages 191-192 particularly affecting top six lines of verso; long crease at fore-edge margin of pages 205-206; large loss to rear free endpaper. Binding shaken between pages ii-iii leaving front board inclusive to title leaf rather tenuous; lesser pliability evident to rear leaves and rear board by lesser shaking evident between pages 206-207. Sold as is and should be re-cased. Four b/w plates on unpaged leaves with frontispiece titled as "The Younger Brothers" and the other three as "The Fight at the Blue Cut," "Second Fight at Blue Cut," and "The Attack on Mrs. Younger's House." Bibliographical references: Storm "A Catalogue of the Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana" #76; Adams "Six Guns and Saddle Leather" #31; Howes "U.S.iana" #A295; Rader "South of Forty" #160. OCLC locates merely one institutional holding of the 1875 first edition (citing John T. Apler as publisher although Adams cites John T. Appler). This second edition is not nearly as rare (OCLC locating 31 holdings) but certainly is scarce in the marketplace and Adams credits the book as the fountainhead for many later and less accurate Younger biographies.
