Hardcover. Condition: Good. Fifth edition. tips and corners worn, spine sunned, bit of surface loss to title page due to previous owner's name erasure. Brick red and gilt blind-stamped cloth. All woodcuts present and correct. Fifth edition stated on copyright page. While the professor gets top billing most of the book was probaly written by his wife, Elizabeth Cabot Agassiz, herself a natural historian. Louis Agassiz was an imporant biologist of the 19th century having begun his career in the 1820's with a study of Brazilian fish. "Stricken by ill health in the 1860s, he resolved to return to the field for relaxation and to resume his studies of Brazilian fish. In April 1865 he led a party to Brazil. Returning home in August 1866, an account of this expedition, entitled A Journey in Brazil, was published in 1868."-Wikipedia. after her husband's death Elizabeth Agassiz co-founded Radcliffe College and was its first president.
