Paperback. Condition: Fine. 1st. xiv, 418 pages, [8] pages of plates, illustrations; 23 cm. Tight, clean copy. "This popularly priced edition of Ansel Adams' acclaimed book of letters - originally published in 1988 as a companion volume to his bestselling autobiography - will bring the vivid letters of America's most beloved photographer/environmentalist to a new generation of fans. Ansel Adams wrote literally thousands of letters to fellow photographers, environmentalists, politicians, family, and friends during his long life - letters that reveal the growth of the artist and the man, while contributing a unique overview of twentieth-century photography and the environmental movement. Among those with who he corresponded are such eminent names as Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, and Jimmy Carter. Wallace Stegner notes in his foreword that the letters 'show him as his family and friends knew him, in the intimate interchange of daily life and at the highest reaches of his thinking and feeling.' / MARY STREET ALINDER began working for Ansel Adams as his executive assistant in 1979. While she supervised his staff and his many projects, her prime responsibility was to assist Ansel as he wrote his autobiography. NDREA G. STILLMAN has won recognition as a curator whose career has been distinguished by her association with Ansel Adams. From 1967 to 1974, she worked in the Department of Prints and Photographs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1974, she coordinated a major retrospective of Adams' photographs and thereafter moved to Carmel, California, to become Adams' assistant and editor of his books. In 1982 she was curator and author of the catalogue for the traveling exhibition "Ansel Adams: An American Place, 1936." Andrea has edited numerous books of Adams' work, including ANSEL ADAMS IN COLOR, OUR NATIONAL PARKS, and YOSEMITE AND THE HIGH SIERRA." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition(so Stated). Signed by Barry Goldwater on the ffep; not personalized to anyone. Volume itself has brown and tan covers with sharp gilt lettering on the spine. An unpaginated work of mostly color but some black & white photos, many of the Grand Canyon and surrounding areas. Unfortunately the book was purchased by this bookseller many years ago, from a dealer in Phoenix, when Barry Goldwater was still alive and when I arrived home from this trip to Arizona and closely examined the book, to my sorrow inside the front cover near the bottom a couple of small insect holes (you could place a dime over them and cover them up) were present. My $100.00 investment to get Goldwater's signature went up in smoke. I was shocked and dismayed! A hard lesson learned. Rest of book is clean & binding is tight. Now you understand the pricing! Available for immediate shipment, carefully packed in a sturdy box. Signed By Barry Goldwater.

Condition: Good. 4to. 66 pp. Good. Hard Covers. Black cloth boards with gilt lettering. Dust Jacket Good. Some shelf wear and rips along edges. Pages fine. B&W photographic plates throughout. Dust jacket notes: "In Plain Sight is Beaumont Newhall's major retrospective. A glorious celebration, it represents the apotheosis of one man's vital photographic career. Beaumont Newhall 'expresses great breadth of vision and deep respect for his medium.' Coming from Ansel Adams in his perceptive introduction to In Plain Sight, the assessment is deserved and reserved for few. Presently a professor of art at the University of New Mexico, Newhall played a major role in developing the two most respected centers of photographic studies: The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and The George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. The author/photographer has carefully selected the images and supervised every aspect of the production of In Plain Sight. Special duotone printing techniques and the finest papers capture the full range of the photographer's creative spectrum. Deep ebony-like blacks and lustrous whites duplicate the magic and clarity of the original prints." Includes 59 full-page black and white photographic plates.
