Broadside, 8" x 10", printed on blue paper in different typesettings, blanks completed in manuscript. Two horizontal folds with light wear at either end, light tanning at edges and along folds. Signed in ink by Sidney Fairbank. At bottom of return is a chart showing a total of 53 returning officers. Very Good. The Return was evidently issued as an aspect of military activities related to the Mexican War. Sidney Fairbank, born in Harvard in 1819, was a carpenter and a manufacturer of wooden wares. He resided in Winchendon and was in partnership with Capt. E. Murdock for many years under the name Murdock & Fairbank. In 1851 Fairbank was chosen an officer of the newly formed Engine Company at Winchendon. In 1864 the Winchendon National Bank was started and Fairbank served on the first Board of Directors. Location and name of commander in caption title and date of composition of muster roll are in manuscript, as is remainder of recto and left half of verso. Old folds. Minor age- toning, a few small spots, ink smudges, and small tears at folds. A good copy. Framed. An extremely rare printed broadside form, recording in manuscript the muster roll of the Massachusetts militia company under the command of Captain Caleb Kenrick of Newton during King George's War of 1744-48. The roll documents the names of each man in the company, his rank and pay, with information provided in manuscript in the appropriate printed columns. On the verso the men have individually signed to acknowledge receipt of their wages. New England provided numerous troops for England's military engagements against the French in Canada during King George's War, which ended the war of the Austrian Succession. An extremely rare mid-18th-century Massachusetts broadside. Ford locates a single copy at the Massachusetts Historical Society. FORD, MASSACHUSETTS BROADSIDES 853.

Broadside, 11 x 7 inches. Old fold lines. Minor soiling and toning. Very good. In a red half morocco and cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. A Revolutionary broadside posting the period of service fixed for Massachusetts militiamen. The copy at the American Antiquarian Society is printed on half a sheet, with a similar broadside (intended to be separated). The text reads: "Whereas doubts may arise in the minds of some of the good people of this state, who are willing to go out at this important juncture against our unnatural enemies, agreeable to the resolve of this Court passed the 12th instant, about what time they shall be held in that service: Therefore for removing any difficulties of that nature, - It is resolved, That all those persons who shall march out on the exigence, shall be recalled within the space of two months from this date, at the furthest, and as much sooner as the service may admit of." It goes on to empower officers to collect fines for sending another person to fight in one's stead, and allows officers to muster the militia "when and so often as they may respectively find it necessary, in order for the obtaining the Quota designed." Surface crack in leather across the spine about 2" above the base. All said the binding is strong. Internally, [xliv], 255pp with 13 maps and 2 pages of sheet music that are duplicates. Plate 5, 7 and 8 are complete, others are missing pieces to the right of the fold. Music plates appear to be missing similar amounts though it is not clear. Text is clear with only occasional foxing. All of our books are individually inspected and described. Never X-library unless specifically described as such.

4pp., 4to. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. An important document, not least for the fact that its author discusses the building of a 'tunnel 4 or 5 miles through the [Hoosac] mountain', anticipating the commencement of the construction of the Hoosac Tunnel by 23 years. The letter is closely and neatly written, with the first page headed 'The following Results of my surveys and levels, in the valley of Deerfield River, are respectfully submitted to the Commissioners of Canals, in Massachusetts. | Viz. Beginning in King's meadow, at the surface of the water of Deerfield River, at the foot off Hoosack mountain'. The table gives figures over three columns for six stages, the first two being 'Thence to station staff No. 20 near the toll gate above the turnpike bridge' and 'Thence to No 39 opposite to E. Hawk's Tavern below the mouth of Cold River'. The 'Total dIstance' for the six stages is '30 miles, 11 Chains, 79 [Links]'. Beneath the table, at the foot of the first page, Hoyt writes: 'On arriving at Hoosack mountain, we found it necessary to ascend to Rice's Tavern for quarters, and as we proceeded up I took minutes for ascertaining the height, and in the morning continued them to the summit beyond Rice's.' The results of these 'minutes' are given on the second page, on which Hoyt also explains: 'My surveys and levels were taken by a Theodolite with a good spirit level, telescope and vertical circle, made by Jones of London, and imported by De Prince of Salem for our Academy.' The letter continues with Hoyt interpreting the results of his survey, including the significant observation: 'were it not for the lofty Hoosack, a canal might be constructed, to unite the Connecticut & Hudson, at the ordinary expence. A tunnel 4 or 5 miles through the mountain, composed of primitive rocks would be a Herculean task, probably too great for the contemplated object. [Work on the 4 3/4 mile Hoosack Tunnel began in 1848 and it was completed in 1875.] Whether water may be found on the summit of the mountain, sufficient for a canal, is a question I cannot decide.' In a postscript describes 'a curiosity' he encountered, 'a rocking stone' found 'on the bed of Deerfield River, a little above Town plain'.
