Cloth a bit soiled, corners bumped, foredge of rear board scuffed, spine ends chipped. Frontispiece and titlepage browned, otherwise minimal foxing. About very good. Jonathan H. Green was one of most successful gamblers in the country until 1842, when he resolved to reform himself, stop gambling, destroy his "gambling implements," and devote himself to ending gaming and gambling throughout the United States. From then, he became the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling, publishing many works, like this one, in which he explains his path out of vice to virtue, and the subsequent work he did to combat gambling and expose crime, cheating, and vice. Intentionally or not, his writing on cheating and tricks is quite detailed and proved popular among active gamblers as well. In fact, the titlepage of the present work explains that it contains "a complete and full exposition" of a number of games, including "thimbles," "diamond cut diamond," "the post office game," "grab loo," and others. Green also wrote several reports on gaming as an agent of the New York Association for the Suppression of Gambling. He led investigations and toured regularly as a speaker. Despite his contemporary popularity, his works are now relatively uncommon. JESSEL 667.

Pronounced foxing to first few leaves, otherwise light marginal foxing. Very good. The fourth edition, following the first of 1847, of one of the classics in American gambling literature, written by Jonathan H. Green (1813-87), renowned professional gambler who eventually repented of his ways and became even more famous as the "reformed gambler." He became a prolific author and crusader, and this work is a lurid expose of crime, cheating, and vice. In the introduction, Green says that this work is unlike any other he has ever written - unlike, in fact, any work ever before published in America: "It is not a mere exposure of gambling, nor yet an attack on the character of particular gamblers. It is a revelation of wide-spread organization - pledged to gambling, theft, and villainy of all kinds." Howes calls this a sequel to Green's GAMBLING UNMASKED. "Exposé of a secret organization of gamblers and criminals. Pages 147-62 relate his trip to Texas and the Choctaws in 1833" - Eberstadt. Green's writings were extremely popular, and this work went through several editions. A scarce work on early American gambling. HOWES G367. SABIN 28534 (ref). EBERSTADT 162:355 (ref).

114,[46]pp. including illustrations. 12mo. Original half cloth and pictorial yellow paper boards. Edges rubbed, back board lightly soiled. Mild toning. Internally very clean. Very good. Jonathan H. Green, "the reformed gambler," is the most important figure in the early literature of American gambling. A famed gambler in his youth, he was known for his talents from Texas to Boston and all points in between. He abandoned gambling just shy of age thirty and became an advocate against it, seeking to expose the tricks of the trade. Here he offers the inside scoop on games such as Dog Loo (played on the Red River), Whist, Thimbles (or cups), Poker, and Euchre, and on techniques such as palming, lapping, forcing cards, shuffling, cutting, dealing, stocking the pack, and cogging dice. Many other interesting subjects are also discussed, including horse racing and nailing a card to a wall with a pistol shot. Green adds numerous tales of personal experience, and the illustrations offer the reader the ability to recognize common sleights of hand. By offering detailed information on how to recognize gamblers' tricks, Green is also providing an advanced tutorial for the aspiring gambler or cheat. The copyright date on the verso of the titlepage appears to read 1850 (the first year of publication), but the worn type throughout, as well as the other titles advertised as available by Dick and Fitzgerald, indicates this edition was likely produced around 1880. A rare and significant work in any edition. TOOLE-STOTT 324.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good++. 1st Edition. Assumed First Edition. Includes illustrative engravings. Common gambling games are described, as are common tricks and techniques for cheating and beating the odds. Jonathan Harrington Green (1813?1887) wrote a quite a bit as "The Reformed Gambler." In his younger years he was notorious as one of the most skilled card players in the US. For unspecified reasons he changed his ways, and became active in the crusade against gambling. After all the notoriety, it is curious to note that he was destitute in his later years. A wonderful example of 19th century binding, with rounded spine and elaborate decoration. Brown cloth over boards is illustrated in black ink with some bright gilt. Spine exhibits some sunning with lightly faded gilt and variegated coloring to cloth. Ends of spine are crushed with a little fraying. Perimeters exhibit light wear, a little more at corners and shoulders. Binding is secure, with a little play to it. Front cover and spine exhibit some mottled lightening along top edges and sides of spine. Front hinge was professionally repaired. Brown pastedowns exhibit minimal wear. Ffep is missing lower corner at 1.5" tear. Interior is free of writing and intentional marks. Inside pages have little scattered foxing. A couple signatures show small gaps in adjoining gutters. 16pp. Dbd. Edges sprinkled. Very light scattered foxing. Very good plus. An extremely rare anti-gambling tract and charter for a new New York anti-gambling society. It contains a mission statement from the reformed gambler and now "General Executive Agent and Corresponding Secretary of the New York Association for the Suppression of Gambling," Jonathan H. Green, author of GAMBLING UNMASKED! and various other works purporting to tell the truth about various gambling tricks. Green lays out his seven-point plan, chief among which is the formation of an Intelligence Office, "by means of which merchants, banking, insurance, and all other public institutions may learn whether persons in their employ, or with whom they have pecuniary dealings, are wasting their substance at the gaming table." He also recommends more pedestrian methods of control, such as providing advice and counsel, and petitioning state governments. Also provided are the articles of the association constitution and its by-laws, as well as a list of rules and regulations for the new Intelligence Office. While all editions of this pamphlet are very scarce, this variant, with sixteen pages printed by Brown & Eckler rather than twelve by William S. Dorr, is slightly more so, with only one copy recorded by OCLC at Yale University. OCLC 887139492.
