Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good +. No Jacket. Reprint. 216 pp. Light rubbing along spine corners, upper page corner lightly thumbed. No markings or notes. 6 illustrations. Includes index and bibliography separated into primary and secondary sources. A facsimile reprint of a 1919 Drew Press edition. A detailed look at Turnbull's daring experiment in setting up an indigo plantation on Florida's Atlantic coast in the 1760s, using mostly Minorcan laborers. The Scottish physician's venture started with 1500 immigrants, the largest European colony in America up to that point. The Revolutionary War disrupted the colony and forced evacuation to St. Augustine, about 70 miles to the north, but it was resettled in the 1800s. Cover shows a historical print of one of the stone-lined irrigation canals built by Turnbull's workers. The system is still used by the modern city of New Smyrna Beach. Size: 12mo --7.25 in Tall.

Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Excerpt from Dr. Andrew Turnbull: And the New Smyrna Colony of Florida Every old inhabitant of Florida knows of Andrew Turnbull. Most tourists on. The East Coast have read Susan Turnbull, that romantic and imaginary version of his Minorcan colony, by Archibald Clavering Gunter, and have taken pictures of the old Sugar Mill and Turnbull's Castle at New Smyrna. If an old resident is asked about him, he says Turnbull was a bad sort, - in fact Gunter makes a kind of wicked ogre out of him; so that about the great coquina ruins, cleft with palm trees, hovers a sinister mist of traditions.
