Size - 4.75 x 3.1 inches, pp 18 ( blank) + 60 + 2 (blank) ; the calendar section at the front of the book is interleaved with some blank pages, vellum binding with fold-over clasp. Book condition - Good ; contents a bit dusty with marks here and there, some blank pages with contemporanous writing, some blank pages torn out, leaf 25/26 has some pieces of loss and a tear (please see photo), binding is firm ; green, vellum binding with fold-over flap and brass clasp ; edges rubbed but not split, spine is sound with just slight loss at the ends, the 'hook' on the flap is missing but the clasp on the back is complete and in good condition. Please see photos for indications of condition and contents. This copy with it's unusual vellum, flap and clasp binding appears to be what today would be called a ' Rider's Merlin for the Pocket ', a robust binding intended not for the bookshelf but to be used as a reference document to be carried by, say, farmers or dealers travelling regularly, and, certainly, some of the inscriptions and the torn out blank pages indicate this type of use.

Disbound. Condition: Very Good. Not Stated (illustrator). A Rider's British Merlin for the year 1795, disbound but in smart condition. A very scarce 1795 almanac, disbound but intact. Stamp to the title page. Rider's British Merlin was one of the earliest and most popular almanacs to be published. The first issue was published in 1656. This almanac for 1795 contains a calendar noting Saints' Days, the weather, and astronomical information. It also includes horticultural advice for farmers and gardeners on herbs, fruit and vegetables, and suggests what to eat and drink to remain in good health throughout the year. This Rider's British Merlin is very scarce for the year 1795, and provides a fascinating insight into 18th century customs. Disbound but intact. Externally, a little age toned to the perimeters, with a faint mark to the title page, but otherwise smart for its age. The title page to page 4, and page 21 to page 24, are detached but intact. The rest of the pages remain firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with faint offsetting to blank pages. Very Good. book.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Reddick, Peter (illustrator). Limited Edition. "A copy of this 'Almanack' (entitled British Merlinand billed as having been 'made and compiled for his Country's Benefit, by Cardanus Rider') has remained in Nicolas' family since the eighteenth century and, as a child, he was shown the special small, leather-bound book with a clasp housing a metal stylus to be used as a pencil to make notes on a specially stiffened page. There are delicious marbled paper pockets at each end and the pages are printed in black and red. The book was one of the inspirational spurs towards becoming a printer! For this book, the 'Notes on Husbandry' sections (an important feature of the Almanack) have been reprinted with the advice for each month being printed alongside drawings made by Peter Reddick which wonderfully evoke the eighteenth century activities in the home and the estate - planting and pruning, sowing and harvesting and how to maintain the health of the family with physick and good sense.
