Die Buchherstellung im Mittelalter war das Werk geübter Schreiber und begabter Buchmaler, unterstützt von kundigen Händen bei Erwerb und Bearbeitung des Pergaments sowie bei der Anfertigung des Einbandes. Einzigartige Bücher entstanden im Auftrage von Kaisern und Königen, Herzögen und Kardinälen, zunächst in klösterlichen Skriptorien, später auch in weltlichen Buchmalerateliers.
