Synopsis

In 1983 Peter Gould and Gunnar Olsson edited a series of essays by a prominent group of geographers entitled A Search for Common Ground. The essays reflected a deep concern for the discipline, and for the way contemporary philosophical perspectives can illuminate current thinking, problems, and research directions. Questions raised about the individual and society, the shaping role of language, the value of dialectical reasoning, and the fundamental concern for structure were certainly not confined to contemporary geography, and many in adjacent fields recognized their common concern for such issues. The current volume, A Ground for Common Search, picks up where its predecessor left off, carrying forth the same tradition of inquiry. The thoughts of several contributors to the original volume are joined by those of a few unusually talented young geographers. This volume is based upon a small conference of fifteen geographers held at the University of California at Santa Barbara in June of 1986. The essays contained herein were shaped by the discussions and close interchanges at the conference. Participants were drawn from nine nations and varied academic backgrounds.
