The objectives of this conference were threefold. The first was to honor the scholarship of the pioneering generation of scholars who led the development of the field after World War II. The second was to confirm the current state of scholarly development. Finally, the third was to explore new directions for future research and publish new research and methodologies. 　 The five topical categories include "Studies of Canonical Paintings," "Buddhist Painting," "Literati Painting," "Art Historical Methodology," "and "Recent and Contemporary Painting."
