From Publishers Weekly:
Spanish novelist Salabert captured the critics' attention with Arde lo que ser (Burn What Will Be, Destino, 2000), a finalist for that year's Nadal prize. This latest book won the prestigious 2001 Biblioteca Breve award. The novel opens in 1942 at Paris's Vel d'Hiv (Winter Velodrome), where the French police have detained 13,000 Jewish men and women before deporting them or sending them to Auschwitz. Among them is Ilse Landerman, a German-Jewish girl who manages to escape, leaving her mother and brother behind. Ilse's chronicle is made up of flashbacks from before and after the raid that brought her to the velodrome and recollections of her years in exile. Her memories are intermixed with those of Miranda, a Spanish Sefardi who is desperately in love with her, and of Ilse's devoted son, Herschel, a man trying to understand his mother's silences and depression. Herschel and Miranda meet in Spain after Ilse's death in 1992 to come to terms with the past using letters, photos, and Miranda's multiple chronicles of Ilse's life as a refugee in Paris, Portugal, Spain, the United States, and Puerto Rico. This historical novel not only stands out for its original structure and well-crafted narrative but also for its fully developed characters. Recommended for public and academic libraries and bookstores interested in Holocaust fiction.Lourdes V zquez, Rutgers Univ. Libs., New Brunswick, NJ
