Grade 3-5-- A book that is full of food and friendship. Elliot takes readers by the hand and tells, with liveliness and candor, all the things he's learned about food and cooking. His mentor is his upstairs neighbor, a former ship's cook who brings elegance to the lowly potato. She instructs Elliot not only in how to prepare it in interesting ways, but also what happens during the cooking process, its nutritional qualities, and its history. While cooking, they also talk about cows and milk products, hens and eggs, general nutrition and digestion. Humane treatment of animals, minimizing waste, and world hunger are also discussed. Indeed, many subjects are crowded into very few pages, but it works wonderfully because of Elliot's enthusiasm and sense of adventure. Cooking and eating are for him friendly, social processes that sometimes include Arthur and Linnea from other Bjork and Anderson books. The variety of illustrations match the spirit of the text: some are informational line drawings and watercolor, some are cartoons of smiling Elliot and his projects, and others are photographs.
