He obtained a bachelor's degree in politics at the University of Rochester, US, an M.A. degree in international affairs at George Washington University, and another M.A. and Ph.D degrees in international management from New York University. As a journalist, he served as chairman of the Korea Newspapers Association for five years, and he has always participated proactively in journalism, as a member of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA), and International Press Institute (IPI).
