Destacó como uno de los jefes militares más eficaces en la primera guerra carlista (todavía muy joven) y en la de África. Asimismo, a caballo entre su actividad política y militar, hay que resaltar su papel como Capitán General de Cuba. Como político, además de su importante papel en la revolución de 1854 y en el Bienio Progresista del que fue misnistro de guerra, fue tres veces presidente de gobierno. Especial importancia tuvo el llamado gobierno largo (1858-1863). De todo ello (y mucho más) trata esta biografía, debida a Francesc Martínez Gallego. Uno de los mejores especialistas sobre la figura de ODonnell y del partido por el fundado, la Unión Liberal.
