About the Author:
Pedro Antonio Joaquín Melitón de Alarcón y Ariza (Guadix, España, 1833-Madrid, 1891) fue un novelista español. Está considerado como uno de máximos exponentes de la literatura realista del siglo XIX. Formado primero en leyes y luego en teología, que dejó inacabadas, pasó a trabajar en varios periódicos, primero como periodista y luego como director. De ideas anticlericales y antimonárquicas durante su juventud, su carrera literaria en Madrid no tuvo éxito en un principio, por lo cual regresó a Granada, desde donde se mantuvo activo, sin embargo, en las intrigas políticas de su época. Participó en la guerra de África, experiencia que recogió en Diario de un testigo de la guerra de África (1859). Más tarde realizó un viaje a Italia, del que saldría su segunda obra documental, De Madrid a Nápoles. A su vuelta realizó un giro hacia una postura católica y conservadora, a la vez que iniciaba su carrera como novelista con una serie de narraciones breves, de las que sobresale El sombrero de tres picos (1874). Entre las mejores novelas de su producción se hallan El escándalo (1875), El niño de la bola (1878) y La pródiga (1880).
