Society thrives on the continuous development of goods, services and ideas which can be applied to enhance the welfare and livelihood of its members. While the human mind has always been, and presumably will remain capable of, spontaneous discoveries of new knowledge, and one can never discount the fact that many valuable ideas are often uncovered by accident or chance, the creation of these new goods and services, sometimes referred to as innovation, is generally a long and complex process which calls for a variety of skills and resources in a number of areas, like research, engineering, manufacturing, marketing, and service, as well as significant amounts of financial and human capital.

While innovation can be pursued individually, by a single person or business entity, the most effective and efficient way to organised for innovation may well be through a collaborative effort with other participants. In this context, collaboration can bring together the complementary assets and other resources of the parties and facilitate the pursuit of one or more of the tasks required to successfully commercialise a new idea, product or service. In fact, business collaborations have been referred to as the pure private enterprise solution for the preservation of market selections and responsiveness, particularly in those cases where the industry is otherwise fragmented.
