This colour guide takes you on a 72-page pictorial tour of the former kingdom, now free state, of Saxony. The tour begins in the state capital Dresden, now rebuilt in all its baroque splendour. The guide gives a vivid impression of present-day Saxony, and offers background information on its cultural history combined with fine photos of the historic buildings, castles, churches, cathedrals and monasteries. The author is the journalist Countess Christine von Br�hl, a descendant of Count Heinrich von Br�hl, Prime Minister at the court of the legendary Saxon King, August the Strong, and his son August III. The guide reveals where such famous composers as J.S. Bach and Richard Wagner lived and worked, along with writers, philosophers and religious thinkers such as Fichte, Leibniz, Lessing, Luther and Nietzsche. From Dresden the tour takes you along the Elbe to the region known as "Saxony's Switzerland", then through the Erz Mountains into the Vogtland, and via Zwickau to the great trading city of Leipzig.
