Das Fließband hatte das Kutschenkleidnicht ganz verleugnet, aber doch bereits automobiltypischesProfil gezeigt: gleichgroße Räder,Motorhaube, Fahrgastkabine. Zwischen 1910 und1930 entstandene Automobile zeigen Schwarzals vorherrschende Karosseriefarbe und ein fasteinheitliches Erscheinungsbild aller Marken. Mitder Abkehr von blechverkleideten Holzgerüstenhin zur Ganzstahlbauweise wagte man zögerlichneue Formen. Verbesserte Fahrgestelle und einehöhere Motorleistung fanden ihre ersten Grenzenim Luftwiderstand, der ab etwa 60 Stundenkilometernder kräftigste Widerstand aller Fahrwiderständeist. So kam man zu neuen Karosserieformen,die dem Fahrtwind weniger trotzen.Noch prägten Ingenieure die Form des Automobils,manchmal gelang ihnen dies sogar mitformaler Eleganz. Nur selten haben Angehörigeanderer Professionen, etwa die Architekten LeCorbusier oder Walter Gropius, das Auto eingekleidet.Nordamerika hatte zwischen den beidenWeltkriegen weltweit den höchsten Bestand anAutomobilen; damit ging einher, daß deren Formgebungein immer wichtigerer Verkaufsfaktor wurde.Das Automobildesign etablierte sich, Ausbildungsmöglichkeitenzogen nach. Neben seinertechnischen Weiterentwicklung entfernte sich dasAutomobil in den 1950er Jahren immer mehr vonder physikalisch logischen Form des bewegtenKörpers.
