Synopsis

The history of the founding of the new city of Athens in the 19th century has been a subject that has seen renewed interest during the last 30 years for those interested in the history of urban planning. Friedrich Stauffert is known for his ten year stint as urban planner (1833-1843) in the employ of the Greek government. We do not, however, know anything further about his origins or education. In Athens, Stauffert tried to keep the areas around the most ancient and important monuments free from construction, presented a register of "usurped" building sites, projected the first city expansion (i.e. Neapolis), and proposed the creation of new squares in the old city, yet his plans largely disappeared into the mill wheels of bureaucracy. Through detailed commentary this work will attempt to provide an accurate picture of Greece during this time. German text.
