Wie im Märchen liegt das Schloss Sayn am Fuße des alten Burgbergs am Rhein nördlich von Koblenz. Das Schloss ist der neugotische Umbau des Burgmannenhauses, das unterhalb der im 12. Jahrhundert von Sayner Grafen errichteten Stammburg liegt. Deren Ruinen bezog Fürst Ludwig zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn nach seiner Rückkehr 1848 aus dem militärischen Dienst in Russland mit seiner schönen Gemahlin Fürstin Leonilla in die Anlage des neuen Schlossparks mit ein. Kleine exotische Reiche bilden die Gärten der Schmetterlinge, die 1987 in zwei Glaspavillons im englischen Landschaftspark geschaffen wurden und heute den märchenhaften Charakter der Schloss- und Burganlage unterstreichen.
