The years from 1955 to 1999 were filled with activity. Brown found himself building a log church at Nahanni Butte; building a log Mission, church, health centre, fishing lodge, and Co-op store at Colville Lake; keeping sled-dog teams; hunting; fishing; working as a furtrader, medic, postmaster, returning officer and dogcatcher; and photographing and painting northern scenes and people. In 1971, he received permission from Rome to marry; on July 19, 1971, he and Margaret Steen, who is part Inuit, were married by Bishop Paul Piche. Amidst all this activity, he chronicled events - the comic, the tragic, the everyday, the once-in-a-lifetime - of life in the North.
