L'Art Roman (L'Atelier Du Monde) (French Edition) - Softcover
It describes novel architectural style, pictorial and decorative period during which, in Europe, the advent of the Carolingian (ninth century) until the eleventh century (or the twelfth century by country). The term was forged in the nineteenth century, was used for the first time by Norman archaeologist Charles de Gerville Duhérissier. This art is expressed through the monumentality of its architecture but also in a rich sculpture and a particularly valuable painting. Romanesque art borrows from varied sources: Carolingian, but also ancient Byzantine, Eastern and Celtic. The largest movement of people and objects indeed favors the renewal of visions and images. The Romanesque period saw the emergence of politico-religious phenomena (crusades, pilgrimage to St. Jacques de Compostela) connecting the most important cities. It is also characterized by the worship of relics. In France, Romanesque art and shines in the second half of the eleventh century and spread especially since the abbey of Cluny.
