Né à Montréal en 1925, Marcel Barbeau découvre la peinture et la sculpture en 1944 avec Paul-Émile Borduas qui l'invite à se joindre au groupe des jeunes artistes avant-gardistes bientôt dénommés les Automatistes. Il participe aux activités du groupe au Canada et à l'étranger et en signe le manifeste Refus global en 1948. Le caractère expérimental de son œuvre déroute son maître autant que ses confrères.A partir du milieu des années cinquante, son œuvre connaît des mutations accélérées, évoluant vers une épuration formelle.
