What is it like to sail away from France, leaving behind a small brown-haired baby? To know for 30 years that, somewhere in the world, there is a boy who looks like you, your son, whose name you do not even know? What is it like to keep this a secret, even from your own parents? And then for him to find you by calling them? Finally you get to meet him, a grown man living in Denmark, a child of your body with whom you do not share a mother tongue. What is it like? It is the best gift you can ever imagine, like rain falling on a dry place. This memoir is a great reunion journey, from Paris, to California, to Denmark! A coming together of a mother and son, the only two people who can answer all the questions the other one has.

About the Author:
Since her first son found her, Wendy Salisbury Howe (born 1944) has become involved with a local adoption agency, speaking frequently to groups of prospective adoptive parents. Excerpts from Like Rain on a Dry Place have appeared in "The Adoption Constellation Magazine." She was filmed twice by the Education Institute of Kinship Center as part of their national educational series. 10 Things: Adoption Search and Reunion presents the issues for adoptees and birth parents to consider in search and reunion. It is available from Amazon. She also appeared in A Work in Progress: Birth Parents and Adopted Persons Talk About Search and Reunion, a training film for professionals. In addition to being the birth mother of a Danish son and a mother to three American children, she is an Episcopal priest. She spends her time telling stories (in sermons) and hearing stories (in pastoral conversations). She was ordained in her 50’s, after following her heart through many endeavors, including free-lance writing, coordinating a survey of local Victorian homes, and owning a quilt shop. She has also completed a second manuscript, a work of fiction called Auntie, about an unmarried woman who is unexpectedly confronting her past.
