Maureen is sixty-nine, a retired college professor who’s just settling into the quiet and gentle routine of what they call the Golden Years. She’s convinced that her life will be filled with nothing more than yoga, takeout Chinese, and weekly visits to a local buffet with her best friend. But life always has different plans, and all of a sudden Maureen’s gentle routine flips upside down. If the prospect of a new boyfriend—after two years of being a widow—isn’t enough, how about two? And how about the estranged daughter, to whom she hasn’t talked in years? The estranged, sick, confused, disappearing daughter who’s showing entirely too many signs of . . . something Maureen never thought she’d have to face? The Golden Years aren’t so golden anymore, and Maureen is going to need all the strength and tenacity she’s ever had to make it through them. The only question is whether her daughter will make it through them with her.

About the Author:
Kathleen McMahon Schwartz began her professional life as a girly geek—mathematics major at SUNY Albany, computer programmer/analyst for AT&T and Honeywell in New York, later a tenured college instructor of Information Systems, then a technical writer for several years at AT&T and IBM. Finally tired of tech, she attended a writing seminar at the Stowe Library in Vermont and was inspired to begin a new career path as a fiction writer. Stay the Night is her first novel, and a new romance set in Mexico is underway. Kathleen and her husband recently traded their ski house in Vermont for a pool house in Florida, where her two sons and five stepsons will be frequent visitors. For fun, she was an improvisational role player for over nine years while in New Jersey, performing with a group of actors in many venues, from PTA groups to corporate training sessions. She is now a puppeteer, using her “granny” puppet to entertain at nursing homes.
Review:
"Maureen learns you're never too old to make things right, to fall in love, to remember you're beautiful." - Joyce Sweeney, award-winning author "I didn't just read "Stay the Night," I devoured it! This novel hooked me right from the beginning with the funny first page where the character Maureen describes herself in a yoga position with a resulting digestive faux pas. While she's 69 and a widow, there's nothing boring about Maureen! You know right away that you're in the presence of a real character and you're eager to strap along for the ride. As a widow myself, I found her experiences and feelings very true to life. While the novel is categorized as a romance, since there is a love interest, it also has a family conflict and tragedy at the core, centered around the daughter Alyssa. This makes it deeper and more multilayered than most romance novels. I highly recommend the book as a really good read." -Smashwords review by user Saraclee
