A timely collection of essays and hymns eloquently calling for a Christian faith that extends an affirming welcome to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons.

To the Tune of a Welcoming God brings academic insight, prophetic vision, and poetic clarity to the question of the church's welcome to those GLBT Christians at its doorstep and already in its pews. Author David Weiss, while rooted deeply in his own Lutheran context, reaches out in these engaging and provocative writings to challenge, encourage, and empower persons regardless of their particular tradition. Teachers, students, pastors, and laypersons whether gay or straight will find these short texts worthy of long reflection and conversation.

About the Author:
David Weiss is a theologian, writer, poet and hymnist committed to doing ''public theology'' around issues of sexuality, justice, diversity, and peace. In his work he seeks to use his gifts as a writer and poet to bring the strength of his academic training into fruitful conversation with the wider audiences of church and society. A graduate of Wartburg College, Wartburg Seminary, and the University of Notre Dame, he has taught religion and theology at the University of Notre Dame, Luther College, Augsburg College, the College of St. Catherine, and Hamline University. He is a lifelong Lutheran and is presently Campus Ministry Coordinator for Social Justice at the College of St. Catherine. Beyond his professional work, David has been active in local peace work and both locally and nationally as an ally for GLBT persons in faith communities. His writing has appeared in newspapers, periodicals, and newsletters throughout the U.S. David and his wife, Margaret, have a blended family of five children, and live in St. Paul. They are deeply invested in the life of their congregation, St. Paul-Reformation Lutheran Church in St. Paul, where David teaches Sunday School and serves on both the Church Council and the Wingspan (GLBT advocacy) Committee.
Review:
Writing with a clarity and passion reminiscent of Robert McAfee Brown, these words by an insightful ally will help many enter into the kind of thoughtful conversation desperately needed in the church. --Marvin Ellison, Willard S. Bass Professor of Christian Ethics, Bangor Theological Seminary, Portland, Maine; Author, Erotic Justice: A Liberating Ethic of Sexuality

A heartfelt compilation of great beauty and honesty. To a church hungry for wisdom and grace, Weiss s unwavering focus on God's loving and welcoming embrace offers a veritable feast one that both nourishes and delights. --Michael J. Bayly, Executive Coordinator, The Catholic Pastoral Committee on Sexual Minorities; Editor, The Progressive Catholic Voice
